Seeking nominations for awards...

Amherst, MA – The UMass Amherst Libraries invite submissions for two student awards: the new Book Collecting Contest for undergraduates and graduate students, and the second annual Friends of the Library Undergraduate Research Award. The deadline for both contests is February 19, 2010. Winners will be announced in late March and first place recipients will receive their awards at the Library’s Dinner with Friends on Saturday, April 10, 2010.

The Book Collecting Contest celebrates reading and the pleasure of creating personal book collections around a theme or interest. UMass Amherst undergraduates and graduate students are invited to participate. Entries should consist of an essay describing the collection and an annotated bibliography. There will be two first place awards of $750 each, one for undergraduates and one for graduate students. Winners may be invited to display selected items from their collections in an exhibit in the W.E.B. Du Bois Library.

The second annual Friends of the Library Undergraduate Research Award recognizes excellence in the use of primary sources in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Undergraduate students are invited to submit papers or projects they have completed at UMass Amherst for a class or independent study during the 18months prior to the submission deadline of February 19, 2010. The first place award is $750, with two honorable mention awards at $250 each. Winning papers/projects will be displayed on the Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) web site and added to the University Archives.

A primary source is a record of an event, an occurrence, or a time period produced by a participant or observer at the time, such as letters, diaries, writings, speeches, photographs, and scrapbooks, or the historic records (archives) of an organization (such as correspondence, memoranda, minutes, annual reports, etc.). Primary sources can also include government documents, artwork, artifacts, maps, music, audiovisual materials (film, audio and video tape), and computer files.

Submission guidelines and evaluation criteria for both the Book Collecting Contest and Undergraduate Research Award are available at:
http://bit.ly/contest_award. For questions, contact Special Collections at askanarc@library.umass.edu.

The Book Collecting Contest and Undergraduate Research Award are sponsored by the Friends of the Library, the Library Director’s Council, and the Library’s Department of Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA). Prizes are made possible thanks to generous donations from Friends of the Libraries. The anonymous entries will be judged by panels of faculty and community experts.

Good Grief!! The survey is back!!

We will be completing the final survey of the semester starting Sunday December 6 at 11:30am and ending Saturday December 19 at 11:30pm. Accuracy is very important as this survey helps chart the future for the Learning Commons. Please put zero's in (instead of blanks) if there is no one in an area. Your help is essential in getting this done. Thank you for your efforts thus far!!!

The University has initiated a master planning study to explore the future of the libraries and how they can best support learners, faculty and researchers for the 21st century at UMass Amherst. In this initial part of the study, the planning team will be facilitating workshops for undergraduate students. These will be interactive workshops that combine facilitated discussions with activities designed to gather input and explore future possibilities.

.

The workshops will address issues such as

Student work patterns and use of the library

Aspirations for future facilities and services, to meet collaborative and individual needs

Support for learning and research and the use of resources

Campus culture and connectivity

.

Please plan on this workshop session lasting approximately 1 1/2 hour. If you would like, you may bring with you 1 or 2 others from your program or group if you feel they would offer additional points of view as part of the conversation. The Wall Came Down! Now What?

Cool, the temporary wall came down and the empty space just makes me want to jump over the fence and run! Or better yet, get my inlines! Anyone for a game of street hockey?

But, the space beyond the tacky orange fencing won't be open to the public until January 18. A lot has to happen before the LC will be fully open in its new arrangement. So if anyone asks, you can tell them that January 18th is the date. Workers will begin to put furniture in the off-limits space for the next two weeks...we won't see any real action in the LC space until December 18-December 21. That's when you will see the glass rooms nearest to the off-limits space (along with all the computers and tables) get dismantled and moved North! If you are really curious...ask me, Carol, or your supervisor. It's going to get very exciting around here.
