Remote Printing

If a patron asks about remote printing, we usually hand them the laminated instructions to follow. As easier option would be to tell the patron to google "UMass Remote Printing". The first link given after this search is the official UMass remote printing website where there are both the instructions and software needed to print from their laptop. It is an easier way to assist the patron.

For fun...Windows 7!

Another Microsoft operating system...although OIT does not yet officially support Windows 7, it is here. Read one review here: http://news.cnet.com/windows-7-beta-first-impressions/

If anyone has a laptop with Windows 7 on it, it would be fun to see it and hear what you think!

Hello...Anyone there?

Frequently, we get calls the LC Desk. Phone etiquette is important, especially identifying the location: "Good morning, Learning Commons, How can I help you?"
.
If we get a voicemail, the red light will be blinking. Press the blinking button, and enter password 123456. Write the message down, and give it to the supervisor on duty.
.
Even though we only get a couple of calls a day, the phone should be answered in the most professional manner possible. Keep up the good work!!!

While Roving....

While on a rove, be sure to check the staplers to make sure they are operational and the printers to make sure they have paper. Roving keeps the LC running smoothly. If there is writing on a white board in the group study rooms...erase it. Keeping the LC tidy is most critical given the countless visitors we get here daily (and nightly)!!! Your great efforts are appreciated!!

Welcome Amanda!!

Amanda Dale has joined our staff as the new weekend supervisor. She brings a wealth of library experience and talent with her as she begins her tenure here on Tuesday October 13th. We look forward to having her join us as the newest LC Desk Supervisor.

The survey is back!!!

It’s that time of year again! Our seating sweeps survey will begin this Sunday (10/11) and will be done at the bottom of every hour (:30) until the following Saturday (10/17).
.
The purpose of the survey is to accurately count the number of patrons utilizing the resources of the Learning Commons. These numbers will be used as a gauge to help determine the future course of the LC.
.
The supervisors will primarily be responsible for completing the survey, but your assistance may undoubtedly be required.

Printers, Paper, and Jams... oh my!!!

Recently two printer trays have been broken in the LC. These trays are very expensive and will need to be replaced.
.
It is extremely important that these trays not be overloaded or jammed into the receptacle. Please only load paper 1/2 way in the tray. Also, be very gentle when returning the tray into the printer. Hold the tray horizontal to the floor and gently push in. If you feel any resistance please stop, remove the tray, check that the paper is properly flat in the tray, and gently try again.
.
Inside you will see upside down triangles indicating the absolute highest that paper can be loaded; load paper only 1/2 up to these. It is better to have to reload paper more frequently than to have a printer that is out of order.
.
If you have any questions, please ask your supervisor.

AVOID PRINTER JAMS.....

When filling the trays on the public printers, always leave some room. There are tabs in the paper tray indicating a maximum level. To be safe, leave some room between these tabs and the paper when refilling.
.
P.S. According to the blog where I got this picture, the mouse was unharmed and set free. The same cannot be said for the printer.

Art is best viewed....

The current exhibit in the Learning Commons is “The Making of a Picture Book: The Marriage of Text and Art and has become a very popular attraction. It is on display until December 18th. Please remember to clean the display cases as often as possible, as the display cases collect a layer of dust every day. Windex and paper towels are sufficient.

Columbus Day

This is a reminder that although Monday, October 12th is a holiday and there are
no classes, the Library will be open and the Monday work schedule in the
Library will be in effect. Please note that it is your responsibility to find
another LC student to cover your shift in the event you will not be working
your assigned shift that day.
.
Furthermore, even though the Monday class schedule will be in effect on
Tuesday, October 13th, we will be following the Tuesday (not the Monday)
work schedule in the Library.
.
If this results in a scheduling conflict for you, please let me (or your
supervisor) know no later than this Wednesday (10/7) so that we can make
arrangements for the coverage of your shift.
.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Peter

Loading paper into paper trays!

Please do not put too much paper in the paper trays of the LC printers. Recently a paper tray was broken and it was found to have way too much paper in it (jammed in and folded).

There are triangular indicators on these trays...please load the paper well below these indicators. In this case less is best! Paper should be checked on every rove so it isn't necessary to put too much in.

Ask your supervisor if you don't see the indicators.

Thanks all! :-)
