Tablet PC and Projectors are now available for
UMass students to check out!

I have posted the policies for the borrowing of tablet PCs and pojectors behind the Clipboard notes in the white notebook. Take time to get familiar with the policies in case patrons ask about these. We are not responsible for lending these out and you can direct students to Reserves/Media on the third floor of the library for information. However, people using these PCs may come to the LC desk for information and for help in using these laptops. Also, if you, as a student at UMass, are interested in these tablet PCs, it would be good for you to read the policies. These are awesome fun machines however there is a hefty liability attached to borrowing these. Borrowers are responsible for replacement costs if these babies get stolen.

Basic rules as posted on our sign:

-4 hour limit
-In-library use only
-UMass students only
-Must present UMass I.D.
-2nd form of I.D. may be requested

LEARNING COMMONS PARKING PROGRAM

Library users are being encouraged to use the parking garage rather than park illegally around the library (lots 64 and 40 are being particular abused by illegal parkers making it difficult for legal parkers to get parking spaces).

In an effort to discourage illegal parking, the campus is offering an incentive for people who park in the garage. From 5 am to 5 pm, people who park in the garage can get the first hour free. We have two (duplicate) rubber stamps for which we can stamp the back of people's parking slips in order for them to get the free hour. We will keep these in the top drawer of the little cabinet.

From 5 pm-5 am, people can park in the garage for just $3.00 total.

Please let your friends know about this new parking incentive. Ask your supervisor about this if you need to.

What do the LC supervisors do on Spring break?

We'll be off on a special Learning Commons Collaborative cruise. Each year, LC supervisors from Universities around the globe get together to brainstorm about the latest and brightest ideas for our ever-evolving LC. Already, we're working on our latest idea...the LC cheer to start out each shift!
We'll see you when we get back!

Please remember to punch in and out

for every shift as well as half

hour breaks!

Thank you!

REQUIRED ATTIRE
FOR FRIDAY MARCH 17
SURVEY FOR TUESDAY MARCH 14, 12:01 AM - 11:59 PM

Students working at the LC desk will be asked to help out with handing out this survey to students in the lobby. The LC will be collecting and numbering these surveys. A selected number of these surveys will be "winners" which means that the person filling out that survey gets a coupon for a free drink at Procrastination Station. The LC desk will be responsible for handing out these coupons.

If you have any questions, ask your supervisor.

Printing errors, particularly related to .pdf files.

I just chatted with Alan K., our systems person, about printing problems regarding some files. Generally these errors happen when someone tries to print a .pdf file and sometimes this happens when the patron is accessing a file from ereserves (but not always). The error might generate blank pages and sometimes a weird looking error message.

Alan would like us to send him a very detailed report regarding these errors...this means, ask the patron the exact steps he/she took when accessing/printing the file. Also, keep a copy of the error message. If Alan can get these exact details, he can try to recreate the printing problem and then resolve it.

When this occurs, please take good detailed notes and then send them to systems at syshelp@library.umass.edu

ANOTHER SURVEY THIS WEEK!!

Fooled ya! The library would like students to please fill out a survey so that they can improve the way the UMass libraries list their hours. There are paper surveys at the LC desk and you were sent one by email. Or, you can find a copy of the survey on the LC computer desktops. Please fill one out and give it to your supervisor! We thank you.

I think that we all can agree that the way the library hours are displayed can be improved.

This is how the hours are displayed now! http://www.library.umass.edu/hours.html Just think of the possibilities!

Please complete your survey by March 14 at 5 pm.

Perhaps you already know this?

For those who don't, OIT has a great page for seeing classroom schedules...just go to:

http://www.oit.umass.edu/classrooms/info/index.html

then go to "schedule classes" and you can look to see what's scheduled and if the classrooms are open (this is helpful if you need to send someone to where there might be open computers).

Another good place to go is: http://www.oit.umass.edu/udrive/index.html to read about the new udrive (udrive2). You should get familiar with the concept of the new udrive as we should be informing our users about using the new udrive (as opposed to the old udrive).

Actually, http://www.oit.umass.edu/index.html, the OIT website, is full of lots of information that you can use at the LC desk...and in your personal work at the University.

Props to whoever fixed the tape dispenser by fashioning a pencil into a widget. You have won the bi-monthly Macgyver Award for Resourcefulness. Congratulations!

Feel free to print this image out and pin it to your LC uniform.
