UMASS WIKI

Here's an interesting resource. Lots of information here.

Tip re: helping people get USB drives out of the computers:

Sometimes, when people go to remove their USB drives from the LC computers, they get a message that the device cannot be removed. Understandably, people tend to panic at the thought of losing their information.

If you are called upon to assist someone in this situation, first make sure that all programs are shut down on the computer. A frequent cause of the "cannot be removed message" is that a file that has been saved to the USB drive is still open on the computer. Closing the program in question can resolve the situation.

If this doesn't work, things get a little less clear. Systems recommends logging out or restarting the computer. In general, this is a good time to get a supervisor, unless you are pretty sure of what you are doing...

Thanks!

NEW OVERNIGHT SUPERVISOR!

Please welcome our new 3rd shift supervisor, Bob Charles. Many of you may recognize him as he is (was) Bob, the Ikon man, who manages the printers and copiers.

Please welcome Bob. He will begin at the desk this week for orientation and he will officially begin 3rd shift on Sept. 10.

We're glad you're here Bob!

Here's helpful information about our paper!

Below find a letter from Mike Milewski of Special Collections and Archives:

The Hammermill, Great White copy paper (20 lb.) that Bob (copy machines) and the Library staff routinely uses is a very good paper quality. Since we have started using this brand some years ago, which tests out "blue" with a PH test pen as top shelf for neutral (lack of acidity), we have stopped ordering special archival paper (also 20 lb.), as both test the same. Therefore, even though our paper is 70% wood pulp and 30% recycled material it is still very stable and will last 50-100 years. In the "old days" the archive community was limited to 100% cotton neutralized paper; now the wood pulp people got on the band wagon and cleaned up their act. When I first start here the ph test on copy paper was "yellow", and then some ten-15 years later it changed to "green". Bottom line, the patron need not worry about our paper quality as long as it is "Great White". If there is any doubt about paper quality, please feel free to send either the patron with questionable paper or a sample up to me and I will test it with our PH test pen.

PAPER AND PRINTERS/COPIERS

Reminder:

No matter how they beg and plead, patrons may not put their own paper in any of the printers/copiers in the Learning Commons. Bob the Ikon man says that this is a real no-no...it could damage these expensive machines.

Refer them to the student copy service in the Student Union or to a commercial copy service in town.

THIS JUST IN....

Please do not send patrons to Reserves to borrow headphones. They only lend them to folks using their media services.

Currently we do not hand out headphones at the LC desk...patrons will need to provide their own.

However, in the near future, we will be handing out cheap earbuds for free to patrons who request headphones.

Thanks everybody!
