If you can't make your shift!

Please do not use email to notify us that you won't be coming in...it's just not reliable enough as sometimes the person you email might be out that day or it might not be their shift.

If you know ahead of time, it is your duty to find a replacement by posting to the email list of our students. (If you don't have that, let me know and I'll mail it to you again).

If you suddenly find at the last minute that you are sick, you must call and talk to a person, preferably a supervisor. Here are the numbers to call:

Learning Commons desk: 577-1272
Carol, Peter, and Myles desk phone: 577-1981 you can leave a message but you MUST still talk to somone.
Annette Vadnais: 545-2562
Althea: 545-6852
Reference desk: 545-0150

If you need any other desk numbers, go to the LC page where they are all listed.

Thank you.

>SHOCK<> We have to do anothe survey!

Thursday, February 23, 2006

SURVEY STARTS SUNDAY FEBRUARY 26 AT 11:30 AM!!! Please conduct the survey beginning on sunday at 11:30 AM. The sheets and clipboard will be at the desk on the cabinet. Ask any supervisor if you have any question...the survey must go on!

Calculators that get checked out...

Be sure to inform the person that calculators are for use here and for a short time. We just had someone bring one back that they've had for a long time and he got fined a lot of money. (I'll let you know if they really charge this poor guy in the next installment).

President's Day Monday February 20

Even though you have no classes, those scheduled to work on mondays are still expected to work their monday shift on the 20th. However, Tuesday, February 21 is officially considered to be a monday. Therefore, monday people will work again on Tuesday (except for 3rd shifters; please report as Peter advised in his email). Does this make any sense? No, but that's the system. For future reference, see the Academic Calendar at: http://www.umass.edu/registrar/gen_info/academic_calendar.htm

Happy Valentines Day!

The LC has been bringing people together...if you know what I mean. Just ask the Building Monitors! >>wink<<

Here is my proposal for the LC Student Staff uniforms I'd like to have developed by '07.
They come in Minuteman-Maroon in addition to the Playful Plum shown below. This would help our patrons to readily identify student workers when in need of LC Help Desk Assistance.

Go away Snow, this is the Spring Semester. Only show up if you promise to get school cancelled!

Computer Cleaning:

Particularly during the day, it might be hard to find an open computer to clean. Please do make an effort to clean your two computers. If you can't, please make a note on your end-of-shift report that you were unable to clean any and why. If you need to, you can clean computers that have already been listed as cleaned. These computers can only benefit from repeated cleanings.

Note: Kate Hudson of OIT said that after/during a cleaning of the OIT computers, you should restart the computer. This allows certain updates to occur that can't happen unless the computer gets restarted. It is not necessary to restart the library-side computers. Thanks!
FYI...Storage lockers are located on the second floor.

“What should I be doing while I’m on my shift?”

By now you should have read this document (we handed it out at the orientation). Please be sure to sign the last page and return it to your supervisor. If you haven't received this document, please let us know so we can get you one. It contains a lot of information regarding the operations of the LC desk. Thanks!

Computer Usage Information

OIT has provided us with a link in which to see how many computers are in use and how many are open. When it gets crowded, check out this link (listed on this blog) and make an effort to get up and show people to open computers. Also, keep track of Calipari use; often Calipari has open computers. Take the time to walk someone down to Calipari. They'll thank you.

Important Note:

Starting Monday Feb. 6th all student employees will be required to fill out of an End of Shift Report.

End of Shift Reports can be found in the bottom drawer of our filing cabinet at the LC Desk, along with stat sheets, campus maps, floor directories, and other useful papers.

Once completed, the report should be placed in the metal tray at the LC Help Desk.

The reports will help us to stay up to date on what goes on during each shift. It should not take more than a minute to fill out, and is a good way to send Peter, Carol, and myself notes, suggestions, and questions that you want us to address.

Thank you for taking this on and please talk to a supervisor if you have any questions.

Best regards,
Myles

Printing Mistakes by LC users...

Sometimes people come up to the desk and say that their printout didn't come out the way it was supposed to. We do not reimburse money to people when they have made errors in printing (for instance, not checked out print preview first). It is their responsibility to make sure that what they are printing is what they want.

The only time that we would reprint something using our guest card is if the print job error was due to a technical or mechanical mistake of the printer (ex: ink too light).

Thanks!

3rd Shift starts February 5th!
We are creatures of the night!
Monday's Orientation Cancelled.

We will review policies and procedures, for those who could not attend thursday's orientation, at your next shift at the desk.

Please take the time to review the policies found on the LC webpage. Feel free to ask any supervisor questions regarding the operations of the LC desk.

Happy Groundhog Day

Create PDF documents on OIT computers!

This is a fun feature and may be useful to know.

1. Open your microsoft document
2. Go to file, then print
3. Under print, choose adobe pdf

Voila! This will create a .pdf file out of your microsoft word document. I believe this works with excel, powerpoint, etc.

Try it! (This feature is not on the library computers).
